Motorcycle Riding Gear
Good motorcycle riding gear is not just for the fanatics or the pros. It is quite simply, in my opinion what separates the
smart riders from the wannabe amateurs! If you want to ride like a pro, dress like a pro. Your gear may be the only
thing that separates you from the tar at 100 miles an hour - buying good protective gear is an investment but in terms
of what it could cost you - well you do the maths!
There is a lot of motorcycle riding gear to pick from to make your motorcycling safe, comfortable and to make you look great. But buying the right gear has many advantages. Apart from protecting you from the road, your gear can also prevent crashes by keeping you comfortable and focused. For example, if you are blinded by the sun because you don’t have the correct glasses, you will be less able to concentrate on the road. The right gear can also make you more visible to other drivers.
Some gear, like your helmet and boots, are a no brainer when it comes to your safety and you will not want to cut corners with quality and design. I recommend that you spend that extra time researching your motorcycle riding gear purchases as these are items you will most probably own for a long time, and you will want to avoid any unnecessary post-purchase angst!
I would suggest that your budget for your motorcycle riding gear should be about 15 – 20% of the total cost of your motorcycle.
In an effort to make this process easier, I have provided pages with the essential items of motorcycle riding gear (see below.) You will find some practical and useful tips on Motorcycle Riding Gear, as well as links to the best sites to explore or to purchase your motorcycle gear from.
- Motorcycle Helmets
Motorcycle helmets are the most important piece of gear when it comes keeping riders alive. This bears repeating – your helmet is the most vital piece of equipment for you to have in a crash situation!! A motorcycle helmet does not just protect your head but also your face, your ears and it can be used to communicate with your pillion via an intercom, and hey - with all the technological advances in helmet engineering, you might actually look pretty cool with one on your noggin too!
The fit of your helmet can make all the difference, so I recommend that you read my tips on buying one if you are new to this!
- Motorcycle Boots
Too often we neglect our feet. Motorcycle boots should be considered an essential element of protection, whether fooling around with your mates on dirt bikes on the beach or doing a full on tour on the open road. Like helmets however, the right type and size motorcycle boots are crucial to offering effective support and protection so shop well, read my tips and be informed!

The same goes for gloves – don’t cut corners here, whether on dirt, track or road. Depending on your budget, owning gloves designed for both the summer and the winter will make all the difference – especially in the UK! More about this on my motorcycle gloves page.
- Motorcycle Leathers
Although leather and riding go hand in hand, this phenomenon was born for good reason. Since the dawn of riding, it has always been clear that the rider needs protection from the track and the elements. Leather was, is and will always be the intelligent answer to motorcycle riding gear. Of course, it also looks good!
- Motorcycle Textiles
Textiles must have been invented by an Englishman – perfect for keeping the rider dry and warm in wet conditions! Read my tips to ensure that if you decided to go down this route, you find motorcycle textiles that both look good but more importantly, have the right protective elements!

It can be hard to choose between textile and leather gear as both have pros and cons. I examine the issue here and suggest a way to help you pick which gear best suits your preferences.
- Motorcycle Jackets
This is a rider’s second skin and an iconic piece of motorcycle riding gear for the biking community! Considering that your jacket protects most of your vital organs, it is a piece of gear that will be with you forever and finally says a lot about your style, I’d search until you find EXACTLY what you’re looking for!
