Motorcycle Communications
Unless you have an intercom system or alternative motorcycle communications, you should set a few basic signals to communicate your needs for any ride that's longer than a quick run to your local store. I have found that it is best to establish some kind of sign language before you set off on your road trip. The rider can always stop off when it’s safe to do so to ask the pillion a question but as the passenger you have no control over this. Just as an example these are the signals I use as a replacement for an intercom:
Turn Left at next junction - one tap on the left hand side of the riders waist
Turn Right at next junction - one tap on the right hand side of the riders waist
Go straight ahead - two taps on both sides of the rider waist
Stop when safe to do so - two taps in the small of the riders back
In my opinion these four are sufficient for the pillion passenger to communicate with the rider. You obviously don’t want to make it too complicated as this can distract the riders’ concentration.
You can purchase other motorbike communications that are designed to help you hear your music, your CB radio or your passenger without straining against the sounds of the rushing road.
