Buy Used Motorcycles
I would really recommended that all new riders should buy used motorcycles, so that you don’t have to be as precious about the few spills that you are most likely going to have when first learning how to ride. Also, a new motorcycle will depreciate much more quickly than a second hand bike, and in the extreme event of you deciding that riding is not for you, you will loose a lot of money on selling a newly purchased motorcycle.
So, first things first: I would recommend that you read my motorcycle buying guide. Once you are comfortable with that content, go to Parkers "buy used motorcycles" so that you can get a feel for prices.
For a good place to shop for cheap second hand bikes, try the eBay Motorcycle Listings
Riders generally buy used motorcycles from a private source or a dealer. You will most likely find a cheaper bike if you buy privately (if you go down this route go to my motorcycle classifieds section.) A reputable dealer however, will be able to offer you the following benefits:
- Be required to follow consumer protection laws
- Offer you a warranty, service package or extras like gear and accessories
- Allow you to test ride the motorcycle without insisting on you having your own insurance
- Provide legal assurance that the bike has not been stolen and does not have any outstanding finance against it
You can search for used bike dealers in my comprehensive motorcycle directory
Tips on how to buy used motorcycles
- Beware of sellers who are selling lesser known models and pawning them off as ‘collectors’ bikes. These bikes are notoriously hard to find parts for
- Beware of foreign motorcycle as again you’ll be paying an arm and a leg for parts
- Common motorcycles have the benefit of a lower resale value, which translates into a better bargain for you
- Always take a friend along with you to hear you what is being said if you are going to look at and buy used motorcycles, as an extra pair of eyes and as a reality check to your enthusiasm
- Before you meet the seller always ask about the number of previous owners, mileage, damage and service history as this may save you a wasted journey. This is imperative when you buy used motorcycles
- Always compare the odometer reading with the condition of the bike
- Check all maintenance and service records – and don’t forget to match them with receipts
- Check the foot pegs, mirror, handlebar grips, clutch lever and breaks for new or aftermarket parts that have obviously replaced broken ones
- Check whether the offered price includes extras like security features, road tax, number plates and fuel
- Get insurance sorted so that you can take the motorcycle for a test ride
- Make sure that the motorcycle has had a HPI check to ensure that it is not stolen or that it has no outstanding finances
- Always meet the seller at their house so that you have more cues to judge the way the bike may have been handled
- If you're buying a used sport bike beware of race bikes, as they will have had hard use
Good luck if you choose to buy used motorcycles – I can’t say it enough, but this is definitely the best option for new riders!
